Niamh O'Sullivan

  • Jan 28,2024
Of all the Meath LGFA county players who have worn the green and gold, few have shown themselves to be as loyal and as dedicated to the county as Niamh O'Sullivan.
Niamh has sadly called time on her long and successful inter county career. A great servant for Meath, she lined out in all age groups in the green and gold from the age of 12 to Senior.
Making her adult county debut in 2008 v Kildare, Niamh went on to Captain the Meath team in 2017 & 2018, leading the team to a Leinster Intermediate title in 2017 and captaining them to their first ever All Ireland Intermediate Championship Final in Croke Park in 2018 v Tyrone. Her performances throughout the campaign won Niamh her first All Star nomination.  Late 2018/19 saw Niamh take a year out to travel to Australia where she suffered a cruciate injury playing for Michael Cusack's in Sydney. In true Niamh style, she put everything into her recovery and was back in action for Meath the following year.
2020 brought  the long awaited All Ireland Intermediate victory in which Niamh played a pivotal role. That game was played on 20th December in a deserted Croke Park due to the Covid 19 Pandemic.
Within the following nine months Niamh, together with her Meath teammates,  had added a Division 2 National League medal and All Ireland Senior Championship medal to her tally, topping it off with a TG4 All Star award, a first for her club Dunshaughlin & Royal Gaels.
2022 saw success in the Division 1 National League final and a second All Ireland Senior Championship title, where her outstanding performance won her the Player of Match award. Indeed her football skill was clear for the whole country to see in that final.
In what was a fantastic season for the Royal Star, she also picked up a PWC/GPA Player of the Month award, an Irish Times/Sport Ireland Player of the Month award and the Croke Park Hotel/LGFA Player of the Month award. The awards were due recognition of her superb attitude and talent.
Niamh has been an inspiration to young players in her club and the length and breadth of the county down the years and will be a huge loss to the county team.
We at Meath LGFA County board, the management and team sincerely wish Niamh all the best in her retirement from the county set up, and wish her well in her next chapter and we are sure she will be seen in the black and amber for years to come.
Thank you Niamh.
(Many thanks to Dunshaughlin & Royal Gaels for the above details)
